I’m pleased to say that both of my entries into this year’s Taylor Wessing Prize at the National Portrait Gallery made it through to the second round from a field of 5400 photographs. Unfortunately they were not chosen to be hung in the final exhibition. Never mind, I’ll try again next year. Here are the two images I submitted, the first is of Valya a girl I shot in New York and the second is of my friend Iain.

  1. Hi,

I saw your post on the Steve huff site, which made me want to see more of your work. Your portraiture particularly is fantastic. I wish I had the confidence to ask total strangers for their photo – I suppose by going to vintage festivals or such, people are more receptive as they’re there to be seen! Congrats on making the short list with these two images too.

    Cheers, Rich

    • hi Richard
thank you for the message, yes going to festivals is a great way to get into that, but even there there are 30-50 photographers eh are all doing the same thing so you have to be charming and look like you know what you’re doing:)

at than one last year I booked two actresses who specialised in vintage to come along and model for me, so that helped add some more considered pictures in amongst all the ‘grab shots’ there’s nothing quite like having someone there who really wants to be photographed and is keen to throw themselves into the process
